Louise Cattrell has undertaken residencies in Bulgaria, America, Switzerland and the Australian desert, with awards ranging from the John Minton RCA Award to a British Council Fellowship in Sri Lanka. Currently living and working in London, rather than her native Scotland, Louise is well travelled. The direct experience of being physically in the landscape and combining both memory and experience is crucial to what she calls the ‘360 degree immersive experience’.
This new exhibition is of Louise’s subtly contemporary, yet timeless landscapes.

Friday 11 October, 10.00 - 4.00

Louise explains ‘Direct experience of the natural landscape is central to my work. Bringing that experience to the studio where I make the paintings becomes part of the collective history that develops in the work bringing the past, present and the potential of the future together. Intrinsic to that experience is the quality of light within each day: the uniqueness that transforms the known to the mysterious each of us bringing our own knowledge and past to what is seen and felt in front of us.
The day will start looking at the exhibition, followed by going out into St Helier to make quick small drawings using the panorama of 360 degrees. Materials will be provided for this part of the workshop. Back in the studio, we will use these to construct an image which incorporates the images, and the development from line into tone and colour.
Please bring paints, boards, paper, pencils. Water/oil jars, rags etc. You have to generate an image from the morning’s outdoor work. Please also wear suitable clothing that reflect the weather situation.
There will be sandwiches at lunch time, however those with particular food or drink requirements may prefer to self cater.
Saturday Gallery opening:
The gallery will be open on Saturday 12 October 11.00-2.00. Louise will be giving a gallery talk at 11.00.
