CAROL ANN SUTHERLAND

CCA Galleries International is pleased to present new work by Carol Ann Sutherland in the artist’s first solo exhibition at the gallery, Within This World XIV.

Carol Ann Sutherland, an alumni of Glasgow School of Art, is an artist making paintings, drawings and prints with an evolving narrative which has been present in the work throughout her career. Within This World XIV is the fourteenth instalment of the same title in a series of solo exhibitions ongoing since the 1970's.

The characters and places in the artworks are intended as an allegory for the artist’s own life and they converse with one another in an enigmatic and captivating way. Depictions of horses, angels, castles, boats, houses, rivers, dogs and chessboards appear throughout her artworks in an often-whimsical fashion. These motifs are playfully arranged with short lines of text and through this illustrated story we are given a glimpse of another world where horses fly and fish have legs. In each artwork, fragments of this fantastical land are revealed to us and, as the viewer of the show, we are able to thread together an interpretation of events taking place across the entire collection of work.

Carol Ann Sutherland has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Art London, The Royal Scottish Academy, Towner Art Gallery, Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Art, Mercury Gallery, CCA Galleries International, the Chicago Art Fair and the McNay Art Museum Texas, where her work is held in the public collection. She was awarded the Meyer Oppenheim Prize by the Royal Scottish Academy.

The exhibition will feature new work made by the artist since receiving the Summer Prize at the 2020 Jersey Summer Exhibition. Also included will be the display of a relief work in stone plus a small retrospective of studio work since 1972.
